Overview:

The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship is designed for high-achieving international students who wish to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in the U.S. and are dedicated to creating positive civic and social change. The scholarship is intended for students who will return to their home countries to improve underserved communities.

Level/Field of Study:

Any undergraduate study offered at American University.

Number of Scholarships:

  • Two (2) full scholarships
  • Up to 8 partial scholarships

Target Group:

International students from any country, except those who are U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or dual citizens of the U.S. and another country.

Scholarship Value & Duration:

  • Full Scholarship: Covers all billable AU expenses (tuition, room, and board).
    Note: Non-billable expenses (e.g., health insurance, books, airline tickets) are not covered, estimated at approximately $4,000.
  • Partial Scholarships: Up to $40,000 per year.
  • Renewable for up to four years, based on continued academic performance.

Eligibility:

Preference will be given to:

  • Students who have overcome significant obstacles or challenges.
  • Students from diverse or underrepresented global and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Minimum GPA: 3.8 (or top 10% of graduating class for 9th-12th grades).
  • Demonstrated commitment to leadership, community service, and advancing the needs of people in their home country.

English Language Proficiency: Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • 95+ TOEFL iBT (with all sub-scores ≥ 20)
  • 7.0+ IELTS (with all sub-scores ≥ 6.0)
  • SAT Reading Subscore ≥ 33
  • ACT English ≥ 29
  • PTE ≥ 65
  • Duolingo 125+ (all sub-scores ≥ 115)
  • Cambridge Assessment English score ≥ 185 (all sub-scores ≥ 169)

Other Requirements:

  • High school students graduating by June 2025.
  • IB system students must have a full IB diploma with at least 3 HL subjects.
  • British A-Level students must have at least 3 A-levels and 13 years of study before August 2025.

Ineligibility:

  • U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or dual U.S. citizens.
  • Students enrolled in or who have begun post-secondary studies at another university.

Application Process:

  • Applications are currently closed.
  • To apply, candidates must complete the AU EGLS application, Common or Coalition Application, and the international admissions process.
  • Applicants must apply under Regular Decision (not Early Decision or Early Action).
